			<description><![CDATA[The diodes are required. It is not so much the voltage of the AVR chip we are thinking about here but the state of the data lines. There are two data lines, D+ and D-. Both need to be "pulled" to a voltage. D+ is pulled down to ground internally inside the AVR processor, but D- needs to be pulled up to 3.6v for the USB to work. This is why we need the diodes.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[I have worked up a schematic from the "the cube" hardware from Dave Hiller. The difference is that it uses an external 12v power source (does not draw power from usb) and drives three NPN power transistors to power 5m of RGB LED Strip (1A). Or, to generate a signal for an external signal amplifiers. 			<description><![CDATA[While the full Thunderbird, twitter, Pidgin functions are not yet developed, there are ways you can use this hardware with Windows. As a straight forward Gmail notifier is now possible than to the work of Dennis and Scott. Scotts gmail notifier can be found here http://ga.graphicport.net/ Scotts program checks Gmail and produces alerts, recently he added support for this porject. And Dennis has recompilied the origional drivers that Windows users need. Check out his Blog http://eeegadgets.blogspot.com/2009/09/led-notifier-software-ported-to-windows.html Dennis's has also produced some handy test programs. On Windows 7 I managed to get this working with a little faffing around.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[Yes, that blackberry LED has its similarities with this AVR-USB-WTF-LED.. Regarding power consumption, the LED is 35mA and the ATtiny itself probably much less, that at 5V makes for a whopping >0,02W of energy consumption. The Intel Atom is a real power eater compared to this, but for implementing all those different protocols you need some memory and processing power, not sure how large/complicated a circuit with its own TCP/IP stack, being able to talk to twitter and ICQ API and POP3/IMAP servers, would be (not to speak of higher power consumption and the need for a wired internet access!) :whistle:]]></description>

			<title>Energy Use</title>

			<description><![CDATA[Interesting comments regarding the energy use. Regretably the led is in this design quite dumb and reliant on the PC to be on. With the Eee PC, this is a pretty low power consumption (around 7w for the processor) providing the screen is off. To do this using less power would require a network enabled processor, which while slightly better power wise during idle times, this is balanced out during busy times. I think really that this would need to be inherant to the design of the laptop before it would make sense. However the power consumption of the attiny processor does not add much to the overall consumption of the netbook, so I don't think we have added too much of a burden to the planet]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[The notion of an incoming message identifier is very interesting. What I am curious about is energy use. You say that this works with the lid closed, but presumably the PC cannot be asleep, or can it? Does the LED notifier offer any energy savings over keeping the lid up (other than not having to keep the screen on, which does consume a lot of power in a laptop)? I suppose one can legitimately argue that a netbook consumes so little power as to why not keep it powered-up at all times. I have a Blackberry which I use as an incoming email notifier when my PC is powered-down and/or I am not sitting next to it. The Blackberry makes a sound and blinks its LED on incoming email (which I can of course answer from my Blackberry or go power-up my PC to answer). It would be cool to have similar low-power notification of incoming IMs, tweets, IP phone calls, etc. My interest, as you may have guessed, is in reducing energy use of computers (and other electronic gadgets).
