Cross Ion Pen with origional Pen refilOK, So justblair.co.uk is an electronics and audio site primarily, but i though I would share with you a half hour hack that converts a Cross Ion Pen into a touch screen stylus for resistive touch screens.

For those who have not seen this pen before, the Cross Ion Pen is a bullet shaped pen approximately 3/4 the size of a standard pen when closed.  It opens by pulling the two halves of the pen apart which both unsheathes the pin nib and elongates the pen to full size.  It’s pretty ingenious though the drawback is that the pen uses non-standard refills which are both expensive and difficult to buy off the shelf.  Some people have resorted to converting other ink refills for use in their Cross Ion.

I bought mine a few years ago and after the pretty miserly ink refill ran out, it was vanquished to the bottom of a toolbox for years.  Recently though I repurposed it for use as a stylus for my Asus T101MT Tablet PC.  The conversion it turns out is a pretty easy job.  I am sure that this little hack could be applied to other pens with similar refill cartridges.

MS8910 This hack is causing a little stir around the web right now.  And so it should, over at openschemes they have had a close look at the Mastech MS8910 smart tweezers.  I have seen this type of multi-meter in ads on a lot of diy electronics sites and had been thinking about purchasing a set.  It allows you to make one handed measurements of SMD (surface mount) components on PCB (printed circuit boards).  If you have tried to locate a problem on a smd populated board using ordinary multi meter probes you can appreciate what a bonus this is.

Anyway what Openschemes found when they researched the design of their smart tweezers was that the IC has additional function not utilised on the design.  With a couple of additions, the most expensive being a micro switch they have converted the smart tweezers to measure voltage on top of the original resistance, inductance, and capacitance functions.

Josef Prusa usb charger Josef Prusa has published a short article on a recent hack that he has done to a Netbook battery.  He added a USB socket to the battery to allow him to charge devices such as i-phones independently of the PC.  His Acer Wind in fact is surplus to requirements these days so this is an interesting way to recycle the old parts.

Be warned however, you can’t just wire up the USB socket to the batteries, notebook batteries output 12v or more.

This is an interesting little modification that i have completed on my EeePC901.  Based on an Atmel aTiny45 processor it's function is relatively simple, but as it is built from scratch, the build took some interesting twists and turns.  Not only that, but it also has a nice little social story that for me was part of what made it such an engaging little project.

During the last few months, Asus has started selling the "eeePC 1000H GO" with internal 3G/HSDPA card for easy everywhere connectivity. While this is surely a welcome addition to the Eee PC range, customers such as Dennis  were left wondering if they had purchased too early. Dennis wanted 3G mobile internet on his notebook and was prepared to take what some may describe as a drastic step to get what he wanted.  Dennis considered a buying one of those ugly external USB 3G modems but considered it a risk to the USB port or even the whole motherboard if the EeePC was dropped or knocked. His solution was to modify the notebook internally…

I recently purchased an Asus Eee PC 901 ultra portable PC. For those yet unfamiliar with these devices, the Eee range of PC's from Asus are ultra mobilepersonal computers which although not the most powerful computers, are incredibly small. This semi guide cover the installation of a touch screen to the Eee PC 901 from Asus. With a couple of hard lessons learned hopefully I can impart to you some tips that will save you money and hassle.

Last week Robert Powell was good enough to post an article on his modifications that transformed a Sony Playstation 1 into an audiophile CD player.  Not only did this spark the interest of many visitors to the site, but it also got me into thinking.  Here's how i got on in my hunt for my own Playstation...

This guide shows how a hard drive can be effectively silenced using some household items and an aluminium enclosure.  I performed this modification a while back on a passively cooled pc.  The hard drive used was an IDE drive.  Even in an open case, with no other fan noise, this device reduced almost all hard drive noise to complete silence.
