I got a hot tip from the Adafruit Industries Blog today that may be of interest to you.  Tektronix have an online PDF available for download, “XYZ of Oscilloscopes”.  II had a quick read through it this morning and it is an excellent guide on the subject.  The 59 page PDF covers the different Oscilloscope technologies, according to Tektronix

“After reading this primer, you will be able to: Describe how oscilloscopes work, Describe the differences between analogue, digital storage, digital phosphor, and digital sampling oscilloscopes, Describe electrical waveform types, Understand basic oscilloscope controls, Take simple measurements.”

If you are looking to purchase an oscilloscope soon, or have recently acquired one and could do with a little help, this document tells pretty much all you need to know to get up and running.  From the theory through to the practical steps you need to setup and use your oscilloscope.
